Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Is Here:
Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Medicare Plan
Medicare Annual Enrollment is officially open, running October 15th through December 7. With so many plan options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news is that choosing a Medicare plan gets much easier when you know the right questions to ask.
Here are four questions worth asking before you make a decision.
1. Are My Doctors and Providers In-Network?
Provider networks can change from year to year, even if you’re staying with the same plan. A doctor, specialist, or hospital that was in-network last year isn’t guaranteed to be in-network this year.
Ask yourself: Are my primary care doctor, specialists, and preferred hospital still included in this plan’s network for next year?
How to check: Call the plan directly, or use the plan’s online provider directory — but confirm the date on the directory, since these can be outdated.
2. Is My Prescription Coverage Still Adequate?
Every Medicare Advantage and Part D plan maintains its own drug formulary, and formularies are reviewed and updated annually. A medication that was inexpensive last year could move to a higher-cost tier, or be dropped from the formulary altogether.
Ask yourself: Are all of my current medications still covered, and at what tier?
3. What Will My Out-of-Pocket Costs Actually Be?
A low monthly premium doesn’t always mean lower total costs. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and your plan’s out-of-pocket maximum all factor into what you’ll actually spend over the year.
Ask yourself: What is this plan’s annual out-of-pocket maximum, and how does it compare to other plans I’m considering?
4. What Additional Benefits Does This Plan Offer?

Many Medicare Advantage plans include extra benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers — things like dental, vision, hearing, or fitness program allowances. These benefits vary widely by plan and by year.
Ask yourself: Does this plan include benefits that matter to me, and are there any limits or waiting periods attached to them?
Take Your Time, But Don’t Wait Too Long
You have until December 7 to make changes, but the best decisions usually come from unhurried review — not last-minute scrambling. If you’re planning to make a change this year, it’s worth starting the comparison process now rather than waiting for the final week.
